Pulmonary embolism is a serious condition that can strike anyone, and ranks as one of the leading causes of sudden death in the United States as well as being responsible for over 250,000 hospitalizations annually, highlighting the importance of understanding and treating this condition effectively. It occurs when a blood clot, often originating in the legs as a deep vein thrombosis, travels through the bloodstream and lodges in a pulmonary artery, obstructing blood flow to the lungs. PE can cause severe respiratory distress and failure by reducing the surface area available for gas exchange in the lungs. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of PE is crucial for timely intervention. EMS providers play a critical role in the initial assessment and management of suspected PE cases. This class will equip you with the knowledge and skills to effectively recognize, assess, and manage PE to improve patient outcomes including looking at rare signs and symptoms and EKG changes we might otherwise miss.
