Did you make friends in your original EMS class? Did you build identity by joining an EMS agency? Statistically speaking, the answer to both questions is likely “yes” and if so, you have a significant advantage over those who did not. Self image, self efficacy, learning, and mental resilience are all influenced by the ability to make and keep connections among peers and the ability to forge identity greatly impacts long-term retention decisions. As EMS leaders, we all play an immensely important role in how our new initiates find connections and define themselves as professionals. We build the linkages that either stand up or tear down community.
