Description
This session provides an exploration of how EMS professionals can better understand, support, and provide care to transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse (TGD) patients. By focusing on practical and cultural knowledge and actionable strategies, the session aims to empower providers to deliver inclusive, patient-centered care that meets the unique needs of TGD individuals. The first segment of the session will focus on understanding TGD identities. Participants will learn key terminology and concepts to describe and discuss gender diversity accurately. This foundational knowledge will help foster sensitivity and respect when engaging with TGD individuals and communities. The discussion will also address common misconceptions and provide guidance on how to affirm gender identities in clinical and interpersonal interactions, ensuring that EMS providers can respond appropriately and compassionately. The second part of the session will highlight TGD rights and protections and broader legal frameworks. Participants will explore how policies align with human rights regulations and laws to protect TGD individuals from discrimination. Practical examples will demonstrate how to incorporate these policies into daily EMS practice, ensuring compliance while creating a safer and more supportive environment for TGD patients and staff. The final portion will focus on delivering affirmative EMS care to TGD patients. Participants will gain actionable tools and strategies to ensure that care is respectful, equitable, and responsive to the specific needs of TGD individuals. Topics will include conducting inclusive patient assessments, respecting names and pronouns, managing situations involving gender-affirming medical interventions, and navigating family or community dynamics during emergencies. By the end of this session, participants will not only be equipped to understand and respect TGD. Core: Special Populations
